As concerns about their psychological well-being grow, the EU has been accused of turning a blind eye to the problem. Special correspondent Malcolm Brabant reports.

Lecturer Fransje Immink decided to take her students into crisis areas like Lesbos and the refugee camp in Calais. She believes experience learning in extreme situations is the only way to really learn to think beyond our western frame. Education as the foundation of change. “Our goal is to build a new community. A community of pioneers who stand for: I am you because we are! “ Fransje is an art teacher at Saxion for the study Social Work. She likes to draw, bake cakes and go on trips with her husband Rogier and her daughter Katoo. She’s a creative thinker and she’s always looking for new and creative projects together with her partner in crime, Marije Draaijer. They try to think outside the box within the borders of education. They’ve set up projects to raise money and awareness for refugees. For example, she went to Lesbos with 5 students to do volunteer work. After that good experience, they decided to set up a foundation: Foundation NOUR. So they can do more of these awesome projects with students for people in a crisis situation. Marieke van der Velden takes us along on an exciting journey past her projects, where she contrasts everyday life with the extremes you see on the news, giving you the opportunity to reshape your own ideas about this world. The purpose of these documentaries is to project a more nuanced image of the way we look at each other and the world around us. Her work is centered on places which receive a lot of news coverage, but focusing on different topics than the news covers, the everyday, the commonplace, the ordinary. In Iraq she portrayed people around the question ‘how are you doing?’ In Kabul she photographed Afghans at their favorite place of the city. The most recent project is called The Island of All Together. For this project Marieke traveled to the Greek island of Lesbos. Here she invited Syrian refugees and European tourists to get to know each other while sitting on a bench overlooking the sea. Marieke van der Velden is a renowned photojournalist and documentary maker. NGOs like UNICEF have sent her on more than 40 journeys around the world to photograph their projects and campaigns. Together with her filmmaking husband Philip Brink, she also takes on one documentary project annually. More than one million refugees and migrants have reached Europe by sea since the start of 2015, the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) says. Over 80% of the 1,000,573 people arrived in Greece, with the majority landing on Lesbos island, it said. About 844,000 travelled to Greece from nearby Turkey. Most of the others - over 150,000 - crossed the Mediterranean from Libya to Italy. The migrant crisis is Europe's worst since World War Two. Migration to Europe in graphics Migrants offered 'bad weather discounts' The migrants reaching Europe by land The number of sea arrivals has increased vastly since 2014, when it was recorded at just over 216,000. "Increasing numbers of refugees and migrants take their chances aboard unseaworthy boats and dinghies in a desperate bid to reach Europe," the UNHCR said on its website. "The vast majority of those attempting this dangerous crossing are in need of international protection, fleeing war, violence and persecution in their country of origin." About 49% of those crossing the Mediterranean sea are from Syria, with 21% coming from Afghanistan, it added. The number of those dead or missing at sea is now at 3,735. The BBC's Paul Adams in Lesbos says that while the island feels less overwhelmed than usual, thousands more people are still waiting to be registered so they can travel to Europe. A growing number of migrants are making the journey to Europe to beat winter weather. The influx has caused tension within the EU, with some states putting up fences and reimposing frontier controls. Last week, the EU agreed to increase the number of Frontex agency staff in Greece, where most migrants arrive before travelling further into Europe. Germany has received a million refugees and migrants, the largest number of any European country. A note on terminology: The BBC uses the term migrant to refer to all people on the move who have yet to complete the legal process of claiming asylum. This group includes people fleeing war-torn countries such as Syria, who are likely to be granted refugee status, as well as people who are seeking jobs and better lives, who governments are likely to rule are economic migrants.

"Lapses" is about time and rythm and how these are incorporated into the soundscape and urban environment of the city of Mytilene. It is a study upon traces that people leave on places they inhabit or use. It can also be perceived as a sonic cartography of the city based on rythmic sounds -that either material or nature create- and visual details from built or physical environment that refer to maps and routes.
