Samer and Zsuzsa walking towards migrant reception point STORYLINE: A 36 year-old Hungarian translator who drove all the way from Hungary to the Greek island of Lesbos with her daughter was reunited with her Syrian boyfriend on Monday, when he arrived on a rubber dinghy from Turkey. Zsuzsa Zsohar, a volunteer with "Migration Aid" was on Lesbos working on a project for the organisation. Her boyfriend Samer Alkaled previously owned two pharmacies in Aleppo but abandoned them to flee to Istanbul more than three years ago and had been in Turkey since then. Zsuzsa had been waiting for Samer on Lesbos since Friday, when Samer's first effort to cross to the Greek island ended with the rubber boat sinking, forcing him to swim back to the Turkish side. Having lost all his belongings in that attempt, he then had to wait for another chance to cross, thwarted by bad weather conditions and Turkish police raids on the shore. He said Turkey was a "good country", but a difficult place for him to live as he was unable to get the work permits he needed. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/08c0031d73427b2381ae4e408e2ecb9c Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

When thousands of refugees arrived on their shores, the islanders from Greece welcomed them with open arms. Here’s a true story of a few remarkable heroes who stepped up to keep humanity alive and have put Greece on the map for the Nobel Peace Prize. http://www.liveinstyle.com/johnnie-walker-the-journey Follow us on - https://www.facebook.com/JohnnieWalkerTheJourney/ https://twitter.com/JWTheJourney https://www.instagram.com/jwthejourneyindia/ #JohnnieWalkerTheJourney, presents The Storyline - A series of films that give voice to real stories of human triumph from around the world and tell inspiring stories of positivity and progress. Come along as the striding man brings stories of indomitable human spirit to inspire people to be more than what they are today. Ode to Lesvos, the latest release is an incredible story of the islanders of Lesvos. The film shines a light on how an island of 150 in Skala Sikamineas, Greece who inspite of being in the middle of their own economic crisis are people with an unbreakable spirit of generosity. In the face of extraordinary tragedy, these islanders not only rescued half a million refugees fleeing the Syrian war but also gave them hope for a better tomorrow. The uplifting support of three islanders whose uncompromising positivity in the worst of conditions has earned them a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. “Can you really ignore what’s in front of your eyes? Because tomorrow it could be me. I could be on a boat with my family and I would like to be helped,” says fisherman Stratis Valamios. This time 12 months ago, Stratis’ life changed beyond recognition as he spent months on end rescuing men, women and children from the waters around his home. His village, with a population of around 150, became the front line of the refugee crisis as hundreds of thousands of people came ashore, fleeing war and seeking a better future. Watch the epic tale of true heroism, hope and human spirit. #KeepWalking

Lecturer Fransje Immink decided to take her students into crisis areas like Lesbos and the refugee camp in Calais. She believes experience learning in extreme situations is the only way to really learn to think beyond our western frame. Education as the foundation of change. “Our goal is to build a new community. A community of pioneers who stand for: I am you because we are! “ Fransje is an art teacher at Saxion for the study Social Work. She likes to draw, bake cakes and go on trips with her husband Rogier and her daughter Katoo. She’s a creative thinker and she’s always looking for new and creative projects together with her partner in crime, Marije Draaijer. They try to think outside the box within the borders of education. They’ve set up projects to raise money and awareness for refugees. For example, she went to Lesbos with 5 students to do volunteer work. After that good experience, they decided to set up a foundation: Foundation NOUR. So they can do more of these awesome projects with students for people in a crisis situation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
